In January 1935, 30 female soldiers of the First Front Army of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army arrived in Tucheng Town, Guizhou Province, alongside their comrades. They cared for the wounded, kept the revolutionary cause alive, safeguarded supply lines and took up rifles when needed. Though small in stature, they took on the heavy responsibilities of their time.
Across the Long March, women from different Red Army units, including Kang Keqing of the First Front Army and Wang Dingguo of the Fourth Front Army, forged their own paths through extraordinary hardship. Their lives tell stories of women breaking free from the constraints of their time and stepping forward with courage and conviction.
Wang Xiaohui, an expert in international communication, joins Dutch journalist Elsbeth van Paridon to explore their stories. What drove these women to embark on the Long March? How did they break through the barriers of their time and live lives defined by courage, determination and purpose?
