On May 29, 1935, the Red Army seized Luding Bridge and broke through the Dadu River blockade. What is less known is the fierce battle at Shimenkan downstream, where Sun Xianrong's grandfather, Sun Mingshan, was seriously wounded and hidden by local villagers in a cave in Yinchanggou for 720 days. Ninety years later, Volker Haering, a German travel writer who had cycled the Long March routebefore, and Jason Dunn, a young scholar, visit Luding Bridgetogether, walking among the memorial pillarsand entering the cavewhere Sun Xianrong tells them the story.
