Amid ongoing battles, the Red Army founded the Red Army University. While marching, soldiers carried cloth slips on their backs to learn characters on the move. Today Chinese and international experts visit Min County, touring the former site of the Red Army University and new schools in Dongxiang villages, to trace China's long cultural tradition of education.
